    New Release Round-Up 07-29-14

Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers - Hypnotic Eye

Hypnotic Eye is the latest album from Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, and the first album from the band in four years. "I knew I wanted to do a rock & roll record," Petty told Rolling Stone in April. "We hadn't made a straight hard-rockin' record, from beginning to end, in a long time." The album is available now and you can preview the tracks as well as check out the promotional video which also covers his upcoming US tour here.  Don't forget that if you picked up the recent Indie Exclusive CD Single, American Dream Plan B, then you can go ahead and use that $2 coupon towards the new album.

    Jenny Lewis - The Voyager

The Voyager is Jenny Lewis's most deeply personal album to date, documenting her struggle to cope following the death of her estranged father in 2010 and the subsequent break-up of Rilo Kiley. The Voyager's rootsy, golden glow comes courtesy of Lewis and the artists she chose to produce various tracks, including Ryan Adams (who, alongside Mike Viola, produced all but three of the tracks), Beck, and Lewis' longtime collaborator Johnathan Rice. The Voyager finds the always relatable songwriter at her sharp-witted best, singing about her recent experiences with honesty and incisiveness. The album is available now and you can preview the tracks as well as watch the fantastic video for her recent single Just One Of The Guys which features a few of her famous friends taking on band duties. And if you bought the recent Indie Exclusive Single then feel free to make use of that $2 coupon towards the album.

When Beck originally released his Song Reader project it was inevitable that one day we would hear the recorded versions.  The twist though is that he asked a few of his musical buddies to take the helm. With Beck and music supervisor Randall Poster producing the album, he invited highly regarded musicians such as Jack White, Jarvis Cocker, Laura Marling, Sparks, Loudon Wainwright III, Norah Jones, Fun. and Jack Black to give their interpretations of the songs. There is also a tune by Tweedy, the new band formed by Wilco's Jeff Tweedy and his son Spencer.

Eric Clapton has often stated that JJ Cale is one of the single most important figures in rock history, a sentiment echoed by many of his fellow musicians. Cale's influence on Clapton and many of today's artists cannot be understated. To honor JJ's legacy, a year after his passing, Clapton gathered a group of like-minded friends and musicians for Eric Clapton & Friends - The Breeze (An Appreciation of JJ Cale). With performances by Clapton, Mark Knopfler, John Mayer, Willie Nelson, Tom Petty, Derek Trucks and Don White, the album features 16 beloved JJ Cale songs and is named for the 1972 single "Call Me The Breeze."

Jenny Lewis - The VoyagerInstallation artist, musician and America's Got Talent finalist William Close explores the relationship between architecture and music while reflecting the heart of The Earth Harp Collective's sound on Behind The Veil. The album features lush Rock/Classical fusions, inspired original tracks & fresh interpretations of beloved coves such as The Who's "Love Reign O'er Me."

Plus there are other great, new releases including Theory Of A Deadman return to their roots with more angst and darkness on their new album Savages which is heralded by the fiery single, Drown, produced by longtime collaborator Howard Benson (Halestorm, My Chemical Romance). The long awaited 2014 album Wastoid from Stardeath & White Dwarfs is here. Their heavy, gods-hammering sound owes as much to sludgy prog-rock influences like King Crimson and Pink Floyd as it does to Uncle Wayne's oeuvre.  Get On Up: The James Brown Story [Soundtrack] features studio and standout live versions of many of Brown's top soul/funk hits- from his first, 1956's 'Please Please Please' to 'Out Of Sight,' 'I Got You (I Feel Good),' 'Try Me,' 'Papa's Got A Brand New Bag,' 'It's A Man's Man's Man's World,' and 'Get Up (I Feel Like Being A) Sex Machine.' Cold World, The new album from Naomi Shelton & The Gospel Queens is a menagerie of Soul music at its finest, untied by the strong message-laden lyrics. Stuck is the third album from American hard rock outfit Adelitas Way and follows their 2011 release, Home School Valedictorian..  And one of the best live albums of all time is about to get considerably better. The Allman Brothers Band's cornerstone LP, At Fillmore East, compiled from the four sets recorded on the weekend of March 12-13, 1971, has been expanded, stretching over six CDs with fifteen unreleased tracks.  The album is also available as an expanded 4LP Edition as well as a 3 Blu-Ray Audio Edition

    New Release Round-Up 07-22-14

Hot on the heels of their acclaimed album Indigo Meadow, The Black Angels release their new EP Clear Lake Forest featuring 7 entirely new tracks.  Originally released as a limited edition 10" Vinyl for Record Store Day the EP is now available on CD or Limited Edition Clear 12" Vinyl.

Ever since his single War Sweater jettisoned him into stardom five years ago (thanks to a game-changing plug on One Tree Hill), Wakey!Wakey! has built a following that's as passionate as his compositions. Built on broader themes such as rescue and hope, Salvation is the follow-up to Wakey!Wakey!'s acclaimed debut, Almost Everything I Wish I'd Said the Last time I Saw You.

Yes - Heaven & EarthHeaven & Earth is the first YES album featuring new singer Jon Davison along with bassist Chris Squire, guitarist Steve Howe, drummer Alan White, and keyboardist Geoff Downes and follows on the heels of the successful and acclaimed 2011 release, Fly From Here. The new album was produced by Roy Thomas Baker (Queen, The Who, The Rolling Stones, David Bowie, The Cars, Foreigner, Journey, Cheap Trick etc.) You can preview the album as well as watch the Lyric Video for the amazing as ever track In A World Of Our Own here.

In the grand tradition of great pop duos like Serge Gainsbourg and Jane Birkin, Captain and Tenille, Simon and Garfunkel, Hall and Oates, and Shields and Yarnell; Got a Girl is the blossoming collaboration between Mary Elizabeth Winstead (Smashed; The Spectacular Now) and superproducer Dan 'The Automator' Nakamura (Gorillaz; Deltron 3030).  On their debut album I Love You But I Must Drive Off This Cliff Now, Got a Girl serves up a sweet and sharply carbonated cocktail of the epic, the baroque, the absurd by turns sentimental and postmodern, and in total, utterly irresistible.

Mike Doughty - Live At Kens HouseLast year Mike Doughty went on tour playing only songs from his old 90's band, Soul Coughing. The last 4 days of the tour, Pete Wilhoit, Catherine Popper, and Doughty himself recorded an album of the Soul Coughing songs they played during the tour performed live.  Live At Ken's House is available now and you can preview the album here and watch the video for his reworking of the track Super Bon Bon

Plus there are other great, new releases including Toronto based Alvvays who on their debut album Alvvays have created a sun-splashed record which is loud and clear and sure. Houston-based R&B singer Dominique Henry AKA Love Dominique follows up her critically successful EP Wicked Heart with the self titled album Love Dominique.  ZZ Top underscore their bad and nationwide bonafides with The Baddest, a hit collection packed with many of the biggest songs that have made "that little ol band from Texas" among rock's most legendary groups. Two-time Grammy Award-winning Chicago rapper, actor Common releases his tenth studio album Nobody's Smiling. British synthpop artist La Roux returns with Trouble In Paradise which may well be the best pop album we will hear this year.  And The Raveonettes Pe'ahi is the duo’s finest effort in years and a great example of what shoegazey noise-pop can do in 2014.

  • New Release Round-Up 07-15-14

    New Release Round-Up 07-15-14

Morrissey - World Peace Is None Of Your Business

Morrissey is one of the few iconic musicians making radical, counter-cultural work, and Harvest Records is proud to release his latest album World Peace Is None Of Your Business which explores the tragedy of human apathy in our turbulent, modern era. Morrissey's career as a writer reaches new lyrical heights but maintains his signature humor, drama, and emotional longing. World Peace Is None Of Your Business was produced by Joe Chiccarelli at La Fabrique Studios in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, France. The album is available now and you can preview the tracks as well as watch the moving video for his spoken word track Earth Is The Loneliest Planet here.

Despite the internal lineup changes and increased success that has followed Rise Against it is clear that on their seventh album The Black Market they have not lost any of the angst and soul that made the Chicago activist punks such a thrilling band in the first place. Sure they have become more melodic but the defiant energy and aggression is all still there, as witnessed on their lead single I Don't Want To Be Here Anymore.

Jason Mraz - YesJason Mraz’s fifth studio release, YES! sees the San Diego-based troubadour teaming up with his longtime friends and collaborators, Raining Jane, for a purely acoustic and more intimate sound than heard on his previous releases. “YES!,” produced by Mraz along with Mike Mogis (Bright Eyes, First Aid Kit, Rilo Kiley), was recorded in rural Omaha, Nebraska and inland Oceanside, California. While somewhat intimate and esoteric, “YES!” still remains a Mraz-like pop album and features classical instruments, cello, sitar and vintage guitars and sings about universal themes of love, faith, healing, environmental stewardship and inner peace. The album is available now and you can preview the tracks as well as check out the beautiful video for his single Love Someone.

After playing live together since 2008, Sasha Dobson, Norah Jones and Catherine Popper have at last taken their collaboration into the studio.  As Puss N Boots they release their album No Fools, No Fun which includes five original songs two each from Dobson and Popper, one from Jones and seven spirited cover tunes, all culled from Puss n Boots live repertoire.

Luluc - PasserbyPasserby is the second album by Australian/Brooklyn band Luluc; it is their first international release and their Sub Pop debut. Co-produced by the band and The National's Aaron Dessner, Passerby shows off all of Luluc's best qualities, retaining the gentle beauty of the duo's debut while adding textures built with a cadre of impressive players. Band influences like Simon and Garfunkel and Gillian Welch (and, of course, Nick Drake) can be felt throughout Passerby, while the poignant restraint aligns them well with label mates Low. The album is available now and you can preview the album here which includes their incredible first single Without A Face

Plus there are other great, new releases including Trampled by Turtles with their seventh studio album Wild Animals where themes of impermanence run deep, both lyrically and sonically. Hercules & Love Affair’s third and most versatile album to date, The Feast Of The Broken Heart sees visionary founder Andy Butler and his ever-evolving musical collective pushing the boundaries of house music, disco, and pop to create a collection of stunningly original new dancefloor anthems.  Spiritualized release a set of limited edition vinyl re issues which include Fucked Up InsideLet It Come Down and Royal Albert Hall, October 10 1997:Live. With his new album Terms of My SurrenderJohn Hiatt, a master lyricist and satirical storyteller, weaves hidden plot twists into fictional tales ranging in topics including redemption, relationships, growing older and surrendering, on his terms. Bleachers unleash their new album Strange Desire.  The highly anticipated album was written and produced by Grammy Award winning musician Jack Antonoff with co-producer John Hill (MIA, Jay Z, Empire of the Sun) as well as Vince Clarke (Depeche Mode, Yaz, Erasure) and others.  And Jerry Garcia releases GarciaLive Volume Four: March 22nd, 1978 Veteran's Hall, a 2 CD Set featuring over 2 hours of previously unreleased music mastered from original soundboard recordings. Mozart's Sister - Being

New CD: $14.98
Since attracting a ton of buzz for her entrancing live shows and for first EP Hello, Mozart's Sister (aka Caila Thompson-Hannant) has been head-down in her bedroom writing her debut album. For anyone who's been following her work - and for new listeners - Being is Mozart's Sister expressing macrocosmic ideas about life with panache and abundant hooks. Inspired by Discovery-era Daft Punk, Post-era Bjork, and Betty Davis, Caila produced, recorded and wrote the album using a cheap sound card and Ableton software, approaching it with a do-it-all-by-my-fu**ing-self ideology.

Christopher Denny - If The Roses Don't Kill Us

New CD: $12.98
Christopher Denny has a voice that will stop you in your tracks; a fervent Orbison meets Dylan tenor that fills his songs with a tremendous emotional pressure. It s the voice of a Southern choirboy who attended the church of alcohol, drugs and self-destruction in a failed attempt to deal with his inestimable inner pain and conflicts - his self-described "soft suicide". Denny has a gift for infusing simple words with raw sentiment and marrying them to haunting melodies over a blend of pre-country Southern music, folk, rock, gospel and singer/songwriter impulses, a style he calls Arkansas Soul.

Showcasing singles from early 2014, Vol. 51 of the American edition of this popular British series offers upbeat tracks like Katy Perry's "Birthday" and Ariana Grande's "Problem," alongside ballads like Sam Smith's soulful "Stay with Me" and A Great Big World's tender "Already Home."
Al Jarreau - My Old Friend: Celebrating George Duke

Al Jarreau - My Old Friend: Celebrating George Duke

New CD: $18.98
Al Jarreau and George Duke were friends long before they became household names. They began playing together in the mid-1960's in San Francisco as Al Jarreau and the George Duke Trio. The successes of these performances are what helped to launch both their careers. George's tragic passing in August, 2013, inspired Al to record this loving tribute to his longtime friend. With the exception of the fitting title track composed by Jarreau, all the tunes were written by George. Guest artists/collaborators include Gerald Albright, Stanley Clarke, Dr. John, Lalah Hathaway, Boney James, Marcus Miller, Jeffrey Osborne, Kelly Price, Dianne Reeves and Patrice Rushen. There's even a song with George Duke playing on it!
David Kilgour and the Heavy Eights - End Times Undone

David Kilgour and the Heavy Eights - End Times Undone

New CD: $13.98
End Times Undone offers a robust sampling of the styles Kilgour has mastered over the last three decades. For an album that comes so late in one's career, it s a surprisingly convenient entry point into Kilgour s body of work. After a psychedelic intro, opener "Like Rain" immediately identifies itself as vintage Kilgour, with shimmering guitars that gracefully swell and secede. "Lose Myself in Sound" will appeal to fans of The Clean who favor songs where the band chugs along on a blissful straightline path. While the album has its share of abstract lyrics, this title is one to take seriously.
The Rosebuds - Sand & Silence

The Rosebuds - Sand & Silence

New CD: $10.98
After spending two years living on opposite coasts and pursuing their own creative projects, Ivan Howard and Kelly Crisp came back together in the spring of 2013 to set to work on the sixth full-length album from the Rosebuds. Joining up with Bon Iver frontman Justin Vernon (a friend and former bandmate who, in a 2011 interview, noted that the Rosebuds make "some of the most important music in the world"), the North Carolina-bred duo spent a week in Vernon s studio teasing out a batch of songs that effortlessly weave the hooky songcraft of classic jangle-pop, the cagey romanticism of new wave, and a refined yet full-hearted sensibility all their own.
Bear In Heaven - Time Is Over One Day Old

Bear In Heaven - Time Is Over One Day Old

New CD: $14.98
Bear In Heaven's 2014 album is aptly titled Time is Over One Day Old. It's a record with a visceral relationship to time and its processes. Where invulnerability and ambition can support you as you grow, at some point they become dead weight, and being true to yourself means casting them off, starting anew. This plays out as a powerful analogy for the band across the arc of it's career.
Spider Bags - Frozen Letter

Spider Bags - Frozen Letter

New CD: $13.98
Formed in 2005, Chapel Hill, North Carolina s Spider Bags were largely a revolving cast, with only Dan McGee (guitars, vocals) persevering through the various incarnations of the band. But during the 2011 recording of Shake My Head, the current lineup consisting of Steve Oliva (bass) and Rock Forbes (drums) was finally solidified. Building upon the foundation laid down by its predecessor, Frozen Letter rocks with the clairvoyance of three musicians who have spent a lot of time recording and touring together over the last few years. "When we started this record, we weren t even thinking about it being released. We just did it to have fun and keep moving forward," says Forbes. This approach allowed the band to push itself further out into the psychedelic frontier than ever before, aided by engineer/producer Wesley Wolfe. Recorded mostly live over the course of a few days, there s an exhilarating urgency to the record, as heard in riff-driven rockers like "Back With You Again in the World" and "Chem Trails." The band brings the tempo down a notch for "Coffin Car," which finds them mining an ominous morbidity over one of their prettier chord patterns. "We Got Problems" comes on like a true acid trip, alternating between utter terror and unfettered joy. Featuring a heavy and repetitive pattern, a slew of effected guitars, and searing guest leads from Superchunk s Mac McCaughan, the song encapsulates an entire Spider Bags epoch in under six minutes. Frozen Letter is the band s fourth full-length record overall and first for Merge Records.
Devonte Hynes - Palo Alto [Score]

The John Lurie National Orchestra - Invention Of Animals

New CD: $15.98

This archival compilation is a much-needed addendum to John Lurie's recorded legacy. Since being struck with a chronic case of Lyme disease in 2000, the saxophonist and composer has focused more on painting than music. The John Lurie National Orchestra was an early-'90s trio with percussionists G. Calvin Weston and Billy Martin. This group recorded fairly little in the studio, issuing only one album, 1993's Men with Sticks. The title track from that recording is featured and showcases just how fluid and communicative they could be in virtually any circumstance. It's one of the true highlights here, with Lurie's hypnotic alto exploring the subtleties of a melodic idea atop a circular rhythm orgy by Weston and Martin.

So when this woman sees fit to name her third album Provoked, you better believe she's not about to start playing coy now. No, this is where the real hurtin starts, and Sweeney's showing no mercy ... least of all to herself.
