New Release Round-Up 03-03-15

New Releases - Tues. 03 Mar

Brandi Carlile
's fifth studio album, The Firewatcher's Daughter, is her first album on ATO Records. It is the follow-up to Bear Creek, which debuted in the Top 10 of the Billboard 200 album chart in 2012. The 12-song album explodes with energy, urgency and pristine harmonies and represents the start of a fresh chapter for Carlile and her longtime collaborators Tim and Phil Hanseroth, also known as “The Twins.” The Firewatcher’s Daughter was recorded almost entirely as first takes without any demoing and little rehearsal before gathering at Bear Creek Studio in Washington State.

“A golden despondency” is how Kevin Barnes translates the meaning behind Aureate Gloom, the title he gave Of Montreal’s thirteenth full-length album. The oxymoron is one Barnes says best describes the overall state of his life and mental outlook while working on the record — penning lyrics so personal they sound like entries ripped from a journal that should be permanently kept under lock and key.

On his new album, Noel settles into solo life with brutish thrills, buoyant melodies and swampy psych rock. The second full-length solo release was self-produced by the former Oasis singer/guitarist and features a guest appearance from Johnny Marr.

The fourth solo album from prolific songwriter, four-time Grammy-nominated artist, multi-instrumentalist and producer, Steven Wilson. Hand. Cannot Erase. is a dynamic 11-song conceptual set, bringing together diverse aspects of his expansive sonic history. Recorded in September 2014 at AIR Studios London, Hand. Cannot. Erase. features the guitar-driven power, infectious melodies, and progressive sensibility of Wilson s sprawling body of work.

TUXEDO - TUXEDO - Stones Throw
is the Grammy nominated duo of Mayer Hawthorne & Jake One, combining their powers for an epic album of boogie funk, a true descendant of the one-word moniker family of funk, where you will find groups such as Chic, Shalamar, Plush & Zapp!

Power pop is an infamously tricky genre to master, and music is littered with bands who were either too slick or too cornball to really conjure up golden harmonies worthy of Weezer, Teenage Fanclub or Cheap Trick.  Praise be, then, for Mississippi five-piece Young Buffalo, whose debut album House stands tall next to those forefathers.  Genre classifications aside, the supremely infectious House is simply one of the first great albums of 2015 in any field.

Robert Earle Keen--Happy

Prisoner Robert Earl Keen’s ‘Happy Prisoner,’ (is) an album unlike any other in his storied catalog. Inspired by the bluegrass and acoustic music he grew up around, Keen has put his unique stamp on fifteen standards and other beloved tunes (twenty on the deluxe edition) by Flatt & Scruggs, The Carter Family, Jimmie Rodgers, even Richard Thompson. Special guests include Lyle Lovett and Natalie Maines on vocals, Nickel Creek's Sara Watkins on fiddle, and Danny Barnes on banjo.

Rhiannon Giddens--Tomorrow is My Turn

Tomorrow Is My Turn follows Giddens’ work with Elvis Costello, Taylor Goldsmith, Jim James, and Marcus Mumford on Lost On The River: The New Basement Tapes, an album also produced by Burnett that was released in November 2014. Her contribution was hailed by Rolling Stone magazine as the “showstopper…evoking antebellum blues with a magnificent voice that interrogates the myths stirred up at Big Pink.” The New York Times agreed, saying “On lead vocals she’s the album’s revelation, singing melodies that hark back to Celtic modes with a decisive presence and a haunting grace.”

JD McPherson--Let the Good Times Roll

McPherson and the wonderful Jimmy Sutton pay tribute to their musical heroes, and they do it in the right way by making their own music that carries that tradition forward. With the addition of new team players, including the Black Keys' Dan Auerbach, JD McPherson is back with more timeless roots rock 'n' roll. Just as 'North Side Gal' proved how vital and irresistible American music can be, JD McPherson has now given us a new record that helps us continue to 'Let the Good Times Roll.'

Blackberry Smoke--Holding All The Roses

Holding All the Roses compellingly captures the energy, attitude, and honesty that have already helped to make Blackberry Smoke one of America's hottest live rock 'n' roll outfits, a truly grass-roots phenomenon with a large and fiercely loyal fan base.

Jeff Austin--Simple Truth

Jeff Austin has been playing professionally for nearly 20 years, most of them as the vocalist/mandolinist of the game-changing bluegrass jam act Yonder Mountain String Band. Austin has long harbored urges to stretch out musically—and even cast a few pop hooks of his own. He finally makes the leap on The Simple Truth, his solo debut and maiden voyage with Yep Roc Records.

Celebrating the 70th Birthday of Bob Marley

Bob Marley - 70th Birthday Celebration

With a legendary and ever-lengthening list of accomplishments attributable to both his life and music, Bob Marley advocated for social change while simultaneously allowing listeners to forget their troubles and dance.

Bob Marley would have turned 70 this Month, so the reggae singer's family is marking the milestone with a year-long celebration of his music and legacy.

For the first time, the Marleys are granting Universal Music Group access to its extensive and private vaults of previously unreleased music to make for stocked reissues, video releases and new live albums.

Kicking off the celebration, Universal will be releasing Easy Skanking in Boston '78 on February 17. The c
lassic unreleased Live Audio and Video spectacle (available on CDCD w/Blu-ray & CD w/DVD) includes over an hour of music, featuring some of Bob Marley's biggest hits: I Shot The Sherriff, Jammin' and Get Up/StandUp.

Since only one camera filmed the action (the cinematographer was forced to change rolls during the performance), the gaps on the visual side have been filled with new cutting edge animation created and directed by S77 and Matt Reed, who have worked on music videos for artists like Pearl Jam, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Cee Lo Green.

Universal intends to announce more new Marley collections and deluxe editions of some of his most enduring LPs, featuring unreleased bonus material, throughout 2015 and you can check out some of the key moments from his amazing catalogue right here.
