switching FROM RIVERS TO RAILS FOR LATEST MUSICAL EXCURSION:
WES SHARON-PRODUCED ALBUM GLORY BOUND, PLUS
CODY DICKINSON-HELMED LIVE ALBUM & FILM RATTLE THE HOCKS

Woody Guthrie, Lead Belly and musical migrations inspire
train-riding adventures in song; May 19 releases include contributions
 from John Fullbright, Turnpike Troubadours,
 Dickinson brothers, Duwayne Burnside

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Alyssa and Doug Graham have spent nearly their entire lives exploring music together. Friends since she was 7 and he was 9, they became a couple in their teens, then husband and wife. Somewhere along the way, they also became The Grahams, a dynamic Americana duo who’ve married their love of adventure with a desire to build on foundations laid by their musical predecessors. Their first song-crafting expedition, along the Mississippi’s Great River Road, became their 2013 debut, Riverman’s Daughter. For its follow-up, they rode the rails — and wound up recording not only a studio album, but a documentary and live album on the move and in venues from Sun Studio to Amtrak’s famed City of New Orleans train.

Their new long-player, the explosive and aptly named Glory Bound, was helmed by Grammy nominated producer Wes Sharon (John Fullbright, Parker Millsap) at his 115 Recording studio in Norman, Okla., and will be released on May 19. Recording in Oklahoma holds special significance for a couple raised as Dylan-loving New York City suburban kids who spent weekends strumming campfire songs in the Adirondacks. Like many Dylan fans, they traced their way back to his greatest inspiration.

Simultaneously, the band will be releasing Rattle the Hocks, a musical documentary focusing on the live recording, and the relationship between the railroad and American roots music. Both film and album (which will be released digitally on May 19) were directed and produced by Cody Dickinson of the North Mississippi Allstars. The Grahams debuted the film at this winter’s Folk Alliance International conference in Kansas City.

“After we recorded Riverman’s Daughter, we were listening to a lot of Woody Guthrie,” Alyssa explains. “The song ‘Farmer Labor Train’ kept sticking in our minds, so we wanted to write a song about trains. We wrote ‘Glory Bound,’ then decided that we really wanted to ride the trains in honor of Guthrie, Lead Belly and other old folk legends who used the train system to bring voices together. We had to go to Oklahoma, obviously, because Woody was our mentor or guide”

HOT CHIP - Why Make Sense? - Domino
With Why Make Sense?, Hot Chip restate their intentions as a band and redefine the very things that made them relevant in the first place. It shuns modernist dancefloor tropes in order to flick through the dusty corners of the band’s teenage record collections. Alternately jarring and chaotic, pared back, thundering, then pulsating and gloriously mellifluous, the album confidently displays its influences.

Eilen Jewell - Sundown Over Ghost Town

Eilen Jewell - Sundown Over Ghost TownEILEN JEWELL - Sundown Over Ghost Town - Signature Sounds
Honesty, confidence, and respect permeate Eilen Jewell's music, dating back to her self-released Boundary County album in 2006. Since then, the Boise native has recorded five studio albums for Signature Sounds with her road-tested touring band, and two more as a member of the Boston-based gospel-charged Sacred Shakers, which includes that well-oiled band at its core.

As hard as it is to categorize Jewell's music terms like alt-country, roots-rock, country-noir, and Americana get used a lot it's even harder not to become thoroughly enraptured by the singer/songwriter's powerful versatility, musical stories, and images. And that gorgeous voice makes you feel like she's singing just for you, out on the breezy back porch or by a crackling campfire. She does so much, so well.

Sundown Over Ghost Town's twelve original songs reflect on recent changes in Jewell's life including the birth of her first child and returning to her hometown of Boise, Idaho. The music has a western feel evoking wide open spaces with the generous use of pedal steel and organ.

Free of major-label-influence, Surfer Blood has delivered a uniquely compelling album, unlike anything in their catalog. The story of 1000 Palms began on January 1st 2014, after playing a New Year's show in Portland, OR. The band decided to stick around for the rest of the month, renting a practice space and sorting through a backlog of ideas. By February, as their lease ran out, Surfer Blood had recorded demos for most of the tracks that are now featured on their third LP.

Formerly of early ‘00s dance-pop favorites Moloko and creator of some of that decade’s most adventurous solo electronic music albums, the unmistakable Rosin Murphy returns with her new album Hairless Toys. For once the clichés of “eager anticipation” and “welcome return” are not misplaced. Her first album in 8 years, Hairless Toys is a career defining tour de force. Tipping its hat to the dark disco of European house music, Casablanca Records and Grace Jones, while seamlessly taking in the freedom and organic spirit of jazz and gospel.

DE Recommends

On Escape From Evil, Lower Dens Jana Hunter emerges: cerebral and hot-blooded, rash and incorruptible, and, crucially, possessing of a loud, clear voice. Hunter is stepping up and taking center stage has emboldened every other aspect of the band. Escape From Evil is a cinematic, tonally rich work. The sounds are clean and warm. The pulse of the album is strong. Escape from Evil marks the follow-up to 2012 s Nootropics.

Laura Marling returns with her fifth studio album in seven years Short Movie. The album, a follow up to 2013's Mercury Prize nominated Once I Was An Eagle, marks a new chapter in her sound and artistic development. Short Movie sees Marling move into new musical territory and may surprise fans with its prevalence of electric guitar. The album is freer and looser sounding than anything she has done before. Marling produced the album, was recorded at Urchin Studios in London and aided by her long time drummer Matt Ingram and studio engineer Dan Cox.

The Wombats follow up 2011’s This Modern Glitch with their third full-length, Glitterbug. The first song off of the album, “Greek Tragedy,” hit #2 on Billboard’s Emerging Artist Chart less than two weeks after release. The band’s 2011 album, This Modern Glitch, hit Top 5 on the UK charts and spawned US hits “Jump Into the Fog,” “1996,” and “Techno Fan.” Matthew Murphy, Dan Haggis, and Tord Øverland Knudsen are the threesome behind The Wombats.
